Causes of T-bone Accidents
T-bone auto accidents are among the most dangerous types of accidents in which a person can be involved. Especially in a densely populated urban area such as Brooklyn, T-bone accidents occur fairly frequently, and all too often result in serious injuries or even death. In fact, more than 50 percent of all deaths in auto accidents result from T-bone accidents, according to data published by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
The personal injury attorneys of Gary A. Zucker & Associates, P.C. have the experience, resources, and skills to represent victims of T-bone car, truck, and SUV accidents and their families, even in complex cases. Our abilities to investigate and reconstruct auto accidents allow us to build strong cases based on incontrovertible evidence on behalf of our clients. We handle the full range of T-bone auto accident cases, regardless of cause. Whatever the nature of your T-bone accident case, you can rest assured that our auto accident attorneys will provide you with the best possible legal counsel, taking aggressive action against the driver whose negligence was responsible for your injuries and financial losses.
Common Causes of T-Bone Auto Accidents
Also known as side-impact or broadside collisions, T-bone accidents describe collisions in which the front of one vehicle comes into contact with the side of another vehicle to create a “T” shape. Although more and more cars are being equipped with side-impact safety equipment, there is generally little protection available to the occupants of the vehicle receiving the blow from the side.
The severity of a T-bone auto accident depends on several variables, including the rate of speed of both of the vehicles involved in the collision and the crashworthiness of the automobile being hit from the side. The most common causes of T-bone accidents include:
- The failure of a driver to yield the right of way at an intersection
- Speeding on the part of one or both vehicles
- The failure of a driver to make a safe, lawful left turn
- The failure of a driver to stop at a red light or a stop sign
- A driver being distracted by technology, a road sign, or something else that takes his or her eyes off the road, even for a moment
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Brake failure, a defective steering system, or another defective auto part
Whatever the cause of the T-bone accident, it is incumbent upon our personal injury lawyers to collect eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence, and other compelling evidence to demonstrate that the driver who caused the accident was, indeed, at fault. We must be able to prove that he or she failed to act as a reasonable person would under the same circumstances and is therefore liable for the losses and expenses sustained by the injured party or parties.
Common injuries resulting from T-bone accidents include traumatic brain injury, pelvic fractures, and head, neck, back, and shoulder injuries. Tragically, one or more of the occupants of vehicles struck on the side are often lost to wrongful death.
Depending on the severity of the impact and the size, safety features, and side impact rating of the vehicle being struck from the side, victims of T-bone accidents are at increased risk of being seriously injured. Common injuries include head and neck injuries, pelvic and skull fractures, traumatic brain injury, and - tragically - wrongful death.
