Signs and Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy What to Look for In Your Child

Not all cases of cerebral palsy are obvious. It's important that parents note the following symptoms of CP in their children so they can get the help they need as soon as possible. Keep in mind that the symptoms typically manifest before a child is three or four years old.

Muscle Tone Issues

Children with CP often have stiff or floppy muscles. These problems cause a variety of issues, such as a child favoring one side of their body.

Poor Coordination

Children with CP may have problems with balance and coordination. In addition to favoring one side, it could affect a child's ability to walk and stand.

Issues with Movement

Children with CP sometimes have movement problems. This includes spasticity and exaggerated reflexes, as well as involuntary movements and tremors.

Delayed Motor Skill Development

CP can delay motor skill development, which includes crawling. Fine motor skills can also be delayed, such as buttoning clothes and using utensils.

Delayed Speech Development

Because of difficulty controlling muscles in the mouth, children with CP may also have delays in speech development and difficulty speaking. In fact, eating and sucking could also be difficult.

Seizures

Seizures are alarming at any age, but especially for young children. A number of children with CP experience seizures from time to time.

Compensatory Damages

Compensatory damages refer to damages sought to cover material and financial losses associated with the birth injury. That includes the medical treatments for cerebral palsy, the cost of assistive devices and therapy, long-term financial strain on a household, and future needs for the child with CP as they get older.

Punitive Damages

Punitive damages are sought in order to punish the negligent party for actions that caused cerebral palsy. This goes beyond compensatory damages. Recovering punitive damages in New York can be challenging. Birth injury lawyers must demonstrate that a doctor didn't just fail to meet a standard of care but acted recklessly.
