Construction Accident Statistics
In order to understand the dangerous nature of construction accidents, we invite you to take a look at some numbers that put the industry's inherent risks into perspective:
Rate of Injury in Construction
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that three out of every 100 full-time construction workers suffered a work injury in 2018. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimated 320,000 medically consulted construction injuries occurred in 2018.
Fatalities in Construction Work
The BLS recorded 1,038 fatalities among full-time private industry construction workers in 2018. This was up slightly from the number of fatalities in preceding years. The death rate according to the NSC was 8.9 for every 100,000 full-time workers in 2018.
High Worker Fatality Rate
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notes that construction deaths accounted for 21.1 percent of all private industry fatalities in 2018. At that time, construction workers accounted for less than five percent of the workforce.

Electrocutions
Electrocutions accounted for 86 construction worker fatalities in 2018, or 8.5 percent of all deaths. Even if a worker survives electrocution, it can result in burn injuries, nerve damage, disfigurement, and disability.
Caught-in/Between
OSHA recorded 55 deaths (5.5 percent) from being caught-in/between. These accidents involve workers being crushed or squeezed between objects. Examples include trench cave-ins and having a body part caught in machinery.

Lost Work and Wages
Recovering from an injury can take weeks, sometimes months. While workers' compensation may cover some living expenses, the fact remains that accidents result in missed work days and a lack of normal income. The Need for Medical Care
Medical costs following a catastrophic injury are substantial. Beyond the bills, consider the time required for treatment. Months if not years of medical procedures and physical therapy may be necessary after an injury.Reduced or Impaired Mobility
After recovering from an injury, construction workers may notice changes in their ability to accomplish certain tasks. Modifying work duties and going easy on the injured limb or body part is common for injured workers.Permanent Disability
Construction accidents that result in paralysis or the loss of a limb mean lifelong changes. Injured workers may need to pursue a career outside of construction, in addition to altering the way they live their lives.Loss of a Loved One

A Duty Between Parties
In any question of negligence or fault, you must define the duty between parties. An employer has a duty to act in a safe manner with regard to their employees or contractors. At a construction site, that would mean safe working conditions, the use of safety equipment, and following current industry guidelines to minimize the risk of injury.
A Failure to Meet That Duty
When a construction site accident occurs, it must be demonstrated that someone failed to meet their duty with regard to safety. Examples of this may include a failure to meet OSHA standards and other work safety laws, a lack of safety gear, poorly maintained tools or equipment, and subjecting workers to dangerous conditions that put them in jeopardy.
Multiple Liable Parties
Pursuing compensation following a construction site injury can be complicated since multiple parties may be involved in an incident. This includes other employees and subcontractors, the makers of heavy equipment or tools, and even engineers or architects who aren't physically at the construction site. That's why the evidence of a construction accident needs professional evaluation.
