One of the most devastating types of injuries that occur due to malpractice is cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy refers to the injury that is inflicted on a child due to deprivation of oxygen during labor and delivery. There are other causes of cerebral palsy, but the one that is related to the deprivation of oxygen during delivery is one of the most devastating because it results in long-term, often lifetime injuries, which render the child unable to take care of himself or others. One of the most crucial and complicated areas in medicine that we must make sure are properly handled is the interpretation of fetal heart rate tracings. Fetal heart rate tracings are the tool that is used during labor, where the heart rate of the fetus, as well as the contractions of the mother, are monitored to check whether or not abnormalities exist. What we have to do as lawyers is make sure that those fetal heart rate tracings were monitored properly. And if any signs of distress in the fetus, that showed signs of being deprived of oxygen, were not handled appropriately, that the proper medical care was rendered in those situations. Oftentimes, what we have seen is that medical providers who were not trained sufficiently to interpret these fetal heart rate tracings were placed in a position where they were forced to do so and, therefore, resulted in mistakes and injury to our clients.
